We're Back after 18 months

After an 18 month absence, the Carlisle Kiwanis blog is back. In being elected LTG. for Division 13S for two years, I found it impossible to continue with the blog. Now that my terms are almost over and things are winding down, we will begin again. The past 18 months have been been exciting to say the least. I would recommend the LTG position to anyone. John Cantalupi, the owner of 19,719 Sid Bream baseball cards, brought a display of Sid Bream memorabilia to Kiwanis. The painting was by Denny Zeigler, while the bat is from the Pittsburgh Pirate days. Sid's Huston Astro's bat has Matthew 5:16 burned into the bat.

Sean Brame, third from left who has quadruple amputations is surrounded by Dick Nickle and Gary Cline, both amputees. Beginning as a broken ankle, Sean's injury quickly progressed into sepsis. Despite the fact Sean wears two prostheses, he plays soccer and is accomplishing all his dreams. All done while inspiring others. A proud brother, Patrick shares Sean's success.

Major Colin DeVault of the Salvation Army gives his farewell to the club. He has served the club as president and secretary. We wish him well in his new assignment in Reading.

Laura Shaffer, Principal of the Letort Elementary School shares how important the Terrific Kids program was to her students. Second, third and fourth grade participated this year. That's 111 kids who set individual and classroom goals, and 109 students met those goals. This gives Nancy Fishman, a Kiwanian and Carlisle School Board President a huge smile.

Newville Elementary Principal, William August says schools need to think, act and educate children differently. Schools must change because it's a different world that we now live in. Students have a relationship to technology that has gone far beyond cell phones and email. Instead of memorizing information today, students need to be able to find information and solve problems. While the No Child Left Behind initiative has been controversial, it accomplished one important thing. It gave a much-needed "kick in the pants" to create a sense of urgency in the educational system. China seems to be setting the standard. We need to address that challenge.

Meredith Bucher, Executive Director of Leadership Cumberland gave an informative presentation on what Leadership Cumberland does and how it impacts our community. Participants for the 10 month program come from local business and industry. They are mid-level professionals ranging in age from 22 to 60+ making this a diverse group which brings different perspectives to the table.
There are three components to the program: 1) sessions studying a curriculum based on non-profit board policies, 2) a non-profit board internship, 3) a public issue forum board where the class identifies an issue of concern to the community and forms its own board to study it. This year's issue was Responsible Energy Users.

Legion of Honor Awards

At a very special meeting on June 2, nine members of the Carlisle Kiwanis Club were awarded the Legion of Honor for their many years of service. They ranged from the newest at 25 years to the longest at 55 years. Along with the Legion of Honor awards, seventeen past presidents were recognized.

...The Salvation Army and the people of the Carlisle Community they serve! May 23 was a perfect day as the Carlisle Kiwanis Club and the Carlisle Rotary Club met at Walmart to accept the challenge of raising money to supplement the annual December kettle drive. For ten hours, people were greeted with smiles, flowers, and lemonade as they entered or exited the store. In return they filled the kettles with cash, change and checks. Together the clubs raised almost $1900 and in the process, had a lot of fun.

Gambling - Who's Hurt?

Diane Berlin, an activist regarding gambling in Pennsylvania, presented information about the REAL cost of gambling. Gus, the second most famous groundhog in PA, promotes gambling daily in TV commericals. Pennsylvania is becoming known as Pennsyl"vegas." House Bill 1317 will allow five slot machines in every bar, tavern and hotel. This bill turns every community into a mini casino. We all pay the high price of gambling.

The Annual Civic Breakfast of the Salvation Army on May 13 featured Major Colin DeVault as the speaker. Major DeVault will be leaving Carlisle for another assignment soon. He noted how the Salvation Army has been part of his life from a very early age. He has been shaped by the Salvation Army. Nineteen Kiwanians attended to demonstrate their appreciation of the service Colin has given to the community and to the Carlisle Kiwanis Club as its Secretary and then President.

The Salvation Army's Lt. Colonel William A. Carlson presented The Spirit of Carlisle award to Earl Keller, former Cumberland County Commissioner and a Kiwanian. In receiving it, Keller noted how important it is to be involved in your community.

Wayne Shade speaks for all Kiwanians when he congratulates Earl Keller on The Spirit of Carlisle award. Well deserved. Congratulations!

District Attorney David Freed

Cumberland County District Attorney, David Freed spoke about the myth of the non-violent offender. He began with a compliment saying that Cumberland County is a very well-run county. The county has multiple programs to keep people out of prison. Many inmates have been offered and gone through those progams.

Mrs. Pennsylvania and Mrs. Galaxy encourage two courageous Kiwanians to take a long walk. Helen Milliron and Gloria Bream were brave enough to represent the Carlisle Kiwanis Club.

They were joined by 11 Dickinson College Circle K members who braved a 90+ degree heat to walk for this little girl pictured below.

This little girl is the reason we walk. She was brave enough to take on the walk along with the rest of her family.

The walk begins with the Stars Spangled Banner sung by Mrs. Galaxy.

And the honor guard sends us on our way. Thank you to the men who paid this honor to all the walkers.

Here we go - college kids doing what they do best - serving the community.

Annual Crime Fighters Awards

Each year the Carlisle Kiwanis Club presents awards to law enforcement members and citizens who protect our community. Two citizens were honored for being observant and aware of unusual activity in their neighborhood or vicinity and calling the police. Awards were presented to citizens Cynthia DuMont for aiding police in the apprehension of an individual who exposed himself to young girls, and to David Guyer for reporting an individual whom he saw hiding stolen goods from Walmart. A third citizen receiving an award wished to remain anonymous. Awards were presented to four detectives nominated by Carlisle Police Chief, Steve Margeson for their quick and outstanding work in solving an incident of home invasion on N. College Street. Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Bryan Henneman, a member of the Criminal Investigation Unit, was nominated and honored for his outstanding body of work including Megan's Law and sexual assault investigations. Edward Jones Investments sponsors the awards along with Carlisle Kiwanis.

Girls in Mozambique

The education of girls is the condition for survival as a people and for economic triumph in Mozambique, and the Unitarian Universalists of the Cumberland Valley are doing something about it. Seeking to raise the percentage of girls going to school, Professor Priscilla Laws spoke about the 2009 Girls' Bursary Project which provides the funds necessary to keep girls in school. Keeping the girls in school is a powerful investment. It delays marriage and motherhood which also reduces the spread of AIDS.

REACH Hip Hop Dancers entertained the crowd with a lively performance.

The King Family Strings can play a stringed instrument right side up, upside down, behind their backs, under their legs - just about anywhere and never miss a beat.

Personal libraries were presented to 15 students who read the most or collected the most money for this campaign. Helen Milliron represented Kiwanis who provided the rewards. Melissa Mikesell, K-8 Reading Coordinator at the Carlisle School District was present to help make the presentations.

March Madness - What A Party

Host for an afternoon of "madness," March Madness that is, was Jeff Benjamin. He kept a huge crowd of kids, moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas laughing and being entertained by wonderful groups of entertainers. This is the final event for the Buck-A-Book campaign for the Employment Skills Center.

Kiwanis sponsored the incentives for the students to read by providing $5000 worth of books that could be won for their elementary classroom libraries. The table is set to give six special books as door prizes. Helen Milliron and Barbara Kohutiak are waiting for the kids to arrive.

.... And, here they come. The first of many kids who registered for the door prizes.

Author Toni Albert, who kicked off this campaign at Bosler Library, was present at the end to share her special books and activities with the kids.

Another special guest was Rascal, the mascot of the Harrisburg Senators baseball team. He also helped kick off the campaign at the library.

Keystone Human Services is at Work Throughout the World

Ann Moffitt, Keystone Human Services Vice President of Community Development, presented a compelling program about the international services that are provided, especially to children and families in Russia and Moldova. She shared the story of Liliana Malencia who spent a year as an intern in Pennsylvania then returned home to establish a Head Start program in her village.

Our FIRST Builder's Club is Under Way!

Congratulations are in order for the first four members of the Builder's Club which met at Lamberton Middle School on Thursday. They will be charter members of the club. Mr. Clyde Forbes is the advisor. A pizza party is imminent as you can see by the soft drinks, etc.

Members are saying a little "prayer" for their first project, which will be a spring garden behind the school. Spring crops will be planted and the resulting produce will be given to Project SHARE. Carlisle Kiwanis is excited and wishes the Builder's Club much success. We look forward to working with the club.

Linda Gable, Director of Resident Services for The RASE Project brings its story to Kiwanis.

CRME (Carlisle Recovery Mobilization Effort) is the first satellite office of The RASE Project. The RASE Project, which stands for Recovery - Advocacy - Service - Empowerment, exists to reduce the stigma associated with the disease of addiction a well as offering suport in the process of recovery. Too often, recovery has been veiled in secrecy and shame. CRME seeks to highlight success stories and demonstrate to the community that "Recovery Works!"

Walk A Mile - In Her Shoes

Brian Musselman shows the shoes in which he walked a mile to raise awareness of violence against women. Walk A Mile - In Her Shoes is an International Men's March to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. The next March will be Monday, May 25 at the Memorial Day Parade in Camp Hill.

Sharon DeVenney was present to receive a $2000 contribution from President Brad Gerlach for Project S.H.A.R.E. Blueberry chair, Lee Burcham and Rose Sale chair, Helen Milliron were present to represent the fundraising that provides the dollars for Kiwanis sponsored projects.

The Cross Arrives on the Square

Each year on the first day of Lent, the Spiritual Aims committee goes to the Lord's barn (Pam and Bill Lord's, that is) and brings the cross to the Square in Carlisle. First Presbyterian Church has been home to the cross during Lent for many years. Thanks to the Project S.H.A.R.E. truck, the cross was transported and erected by this group of volunteers.

Even local Carlinians help to erect the cross. They've done their part for several years now.

Celtic Home HealthCare and Hospice began in 2000 and is one of 3500 Hospice agencies in the U. S. Their mission is to enable patients to continue an alert, pain-free life and to manage other symptoms so they may live each day with dignity.

"Buck-A-Book" Books Arrive at Amelia Given Library

Cynthia Thompson, Library Director at the Amelia S. Given Free Library in Mt. Holly Springs shows one of the books with the Kiwanis label on the cover that children who participated in the Buck-A-Book program will be able to take home with them. Kiwanis is providing 180 books to the library to give to children. Presentations of other books to the Carlisle Area School District elementary schools will be made in March at the school board meeting.

About 1/3 of the 180 books delivered to the Library.

"Just Like New" is A Bonus for Families

Four years ago, 22 consigners brought to fruition a vision of Mary Ann Westbrook's when they filled her garage with quality used clothing, furniture and toys for children. Today, three moves later, she is located at Midway Skating Rink where the over flow from 900 consigners goes outside to a large tent and three U-Haul trucks. Two sales are held each year, one in the spring and the other in the fall. People come from three states to be part of this event.

Katherine, who had a dog training business in Florida for many years, is interested in how animals communicate with each other. She is the Operations Manager at Pet Smart.

Carson Long Military Institute

Route 34 to New Bloomfield leads directly to the Carson Long Military Institute, a boarding school for boys. According to COL Matthew Brown many boys aren't able to reach their potential in public schools and Carson Long is a place which serves that need. Presently, 146 boys find it home. There they can expect to receive a strong college preparation, athletics and extra curricular participation, and, most importantly, opportunity for leadership development. The school houses boys from 6th to 12th grades and 30-35 faculty members.

Women in the Army

LTC Irene V. Glaeser visited the club on January 27. She has spent more than 26 years as an active officer and also in the reserves. The Army is wide open to women if they remain in the service. Recently, Anne Dunwoody was the first woman to become a Four-star General. There is no limit - the glass ceiling has been broken.

Buck-A-Book Kick-off, January 9

Carlisle Kiwanis is partnering with The Employment Skills Center in a reading program during the month of January which will raise funds for adult literacy. The kick-off was held January 9 at Bosler Library.

Author, Toni Albert was present to read The Coral Reef Adventure to the children. She brought many examples of sea shells with her to illustrate the story.

This young man is listening to the sound of the ocean. Haven't we all done that? It's magical!

The children and their parents enjoyed the story as Toni Albert captivated them with her special delivery.

Rascal, The Senator's mascot came to read to the children. But we discovered, HE CAN'T TALK! So one of the children read the story as Rascal helped. Joe Kloza from the Employment Skills Center directs the reading activity.

Dennis Gotthard and His Mannequins

Kiwanians sat among an elaborate display of mannequins provided by Dennis Gotthard. Gotthard, who owned Cochran and Allen Hardware, saw the "writing on the wall" when Home Depot and Lowe's opened. Selling the hardware store and moving to Mt. Holly, he owns over 2000 mannequins. He rents and sells to retail stores, churches, police for parked cars, those who wish to ride the HOV lanes (and not get caught), movies, museums, etc. Many of the mannequins are becoming works of art as you can see. He has thousands of hands, which are the most likely part to break.

This beautiful decoupage was done by Pat Craig of Carlisle.

The posable mannequin purchased from Disney is quite useful.

Carlisle's Finest - The Fire Fighters

Carlisle Fire Chief, Bob Kennedy gives the club insight into what's happening with firefighting. There are 75,000 volunteers in the state of Pennsylvania who work to keep us safe. Firefighters are type A personality. He says, "Firefighters are going into a building when everyone else is coming out including cockroaches." They are jack of all trades and must be trained in all areas. Presently, discussions are ongoing regarding a regional fire authority.

Karolina Blaszak, an intern in the Student Business Intern program tells Kiwanis where she's working and the things she's learning in the United States that she can take back to Poland at the end of her four month term here. Karolina is working at an insurance agency and will return home to a job with UPS.William Minsker (left) created the internship program and currently has 80 candidates to place with businesses in the Central Pennsylvania area. The program is for Master's Degree collegiate students from Poland's University of Economics in Wroclaw. Students gain practical experience in their academic field, gain practical knowledge of the American free enterprise system, improve their "English" language, and learn more about and participate in life in the United States.

Goodbye, Dear Friend

Amidst a "sea" of roses
Carol Lee Talley 1937 - 2008

Today, we say goodby to a dear friend of Kiwanis. Carol Talley lost a four-year battle with cancer on Saturday, December 27. As the Editor of The Sentinel, she took on journalistic challenges that would inform, then place one right in the midst of the fray. As a member of Kiwanis she was a staunch advocate of reading, working with the Bosler Library in the "Mother Goose Asks Why" program. Taking on the rose sale was her challenge for the past two years. Monies raised from the rose sale are used to fund many Kiwanis programs that help children, something Carol believed in with her whole heart. She would be pleased to know that this year's rose sale profits will purchase books for many elementary school libraries and will impact over 2500 children. Carol was the second woman to be admitted to membership in the Carlisle Kiwanis Club, joining in 1988, just seven months after the ban on women belonging to the organization was lifted at its international convention. The Carlisle Kiwanis Club and the Carlisle community have lost a champion. We will miss her.

What's New With Dickinson Athletics?

Dr. Leslie Poolman, Director of P.E and Athletics spoke about what's new at Dickinson College in the Athletic Department. There are 550 Scholar Athletes at Dickinson. He spoke about the new football field and the upgrade from a six lane to an eight lane track.
Dr Poolman also shared the story of the time in 1931 when Dickinson College beat Penn State in Football (10-6). When the team returned to Carlisle by train, it caused a riot. Needless to say, the club enjoyed this story enormously.

On December 2, the International Fellows from the U. S. Army War College were hosted at lunch by the Carlisle Kiwanis Club. The Fellows Program, which began in 1978, has graduated 1012 officers from 112 different countries.

The program has three objectives: academic, cultural and interpersonal. Fellows arrive in the United States six weeks prior to the start of classes to become oriented to Carlisle, where they will live for the next year, and to do things unique to the American culture.

The most important part of the program is the interpersonal component. Fellows develop friendships and relationships with their counterparts from all around the world which last for the rest of their lives. The 2009 class consists of Fellows from 42 countries. Because of the importance of this program, next year's class will increase its membership to 50 countries.

Of the 42 countries in this year's class, 26 of them have Kiwanis clubs.

The senior historian at the Carlisle Barracks brought his expertise to the Kiwanis club. He joined the staff at the Military History Institute in 1970. The MHI has a library of 400,000 books on military history dating back to George Washington. It has the finest collection of books anywhere on the Civil War which Ken Burns used extensively when he produced his documentaries on the Civil War. The MHI is the Army's public library for military history. The Army Heritage Museum has over 50,000 artifacts, a number of which are on display on the Army Heritage Trail outside Ridgeway Hall.

Dr. Sommers had the pleasure of accompaning President George W. Bush and his party on a tour of the Gettysburg battlefield recently. He says it was the "highlight of my career."

Walk 1 Mile Shares its Story

Greg Hench, Katie Weagle and Chris Juliano share stories of the disabled. The challenge from Walk 1 Mile was to put yourself in the place of a disabled person.

Sixty-five years is the accumulated time these seven people have for perfect attendance.

The Carlisle Parks and Rec Department is the recipient of $1000 to help repair Fort Letort. Chris Hoffman is happy to accept a check from Kiwanis. This is blueberry money at work in the community.

Ha Ha Helen aka. Helen Marie Szollosy presented a program on the benefits of laughter. She has learned to look at former trials in life as gifts. She shares a unique perspective on laughter.

It's down to business at the first board meeting of the Gerlach term. Also present was Circle K of Dickinson College to share the vision for their new year.

YMCA Soccer Field Dedication

Today's the big day - dedication of the new George B. Stuart Athletic Fields built by the Carlisle Family YMCA. Carlisle Kiwanis is the proud sponsor of Field 1, the main playing field.

George Douglas accepts a plaque from Nick Lello, the President of the Board of Directors of the YMCA.

Carlisle Kiwanis is one of many who made the Athletic Fields possible.

These young soccer players are waiting patiently for the chance to get on the field. . .

. . . while these are waiting to see if anyone would win a doorprize! One did! : )

Thirteen Kiwanians attended this event and happily watched about 200 young people take to the fields. Thanks to all who came and gave a great start to the YMCA Soccer season.

Employment Skills Center Success Story

Joe Kloza, Program Manager for Nurse Aide Training at the Employment Skills Center spoke to the Carlisle Kiwanis Club on August 26 and brought Rebecca Eledge to celebrate her success. Rebecca passed her state examination to be a Certified Nursing Assistant just hours before this picture was taken.

Past President of the Carlisle Kiwanis Club, Carol Lorence congratulates Rebecca on her success. The smiles on both faces tell the story. Rebecca was able to move from an unpaid Nanny, to the Employment Skills Center (ESC), to the Pre-Clinical Nurse Aide Training, to having her own place and a car that runs! This is an example of the success that can be gained with hard work and the compassion that is shown by ESC personnel. She will share that same compassion in her work with patients at the nursing home.

Joe Kloza is the Chairman of the Buck A Book week that will be held in Cumberland County in January, 2009. This campaign will empower KIDS and ADULTS with the power of reading! Three school districts, Carlisle, Big Spring and South Middleton will participate in Buck A Book hoping to raise funds that will support the literacy program at ESC. In return, students have the opportunity to receive free ice cream coupons from Leo's Ice Cream, Senator's Tickets, and an Apple IPod. A school that exceeds last years' contribution by 20% will receive a gift of 100 books for their library.

Dickinson College Circle K is ready for a new year and Club President, Katherine Schilling (right) invites all Kiwanis members to attend the first meeting of the year on Monday, Sept. 1 at 5:45 in HUB room 205. Kiwanis honors Iain Fields

Carlisle Kiwanis President, Beth James honored 14 year-old Iain Fields at the August 19 meeting for saving a drowning boy while on vacation. Iain was presented with an award and a $50 gift certificate from the club. Iain spoke to the club about his experience and the new friend he made for life.

YMCA Soccer Field Dedication

The new YMCA Soccer Fields will be dedicated on Saturday, September 6. The fields, which cover 12 acres of land, are located on Rockledge Drive, Carlisle. This a joint project between Church of God Home, South Middleton Township, and the Carlisle Family YMCA.

Kiwanis members are asked to attend the dedication wearing shirts, hats, anything that says "Kiwanis." Carlisle Kiwanis has made a five-year commitment to sponsor one of three large playing fields. These fields along with multiple practice fields will be home to around 500 young soccer players. September 6 will begin the first year of a five-year commitment to Carlisle Soccer by the Kiwanis Club.

The schedule on Sept. 6 includes:

8:00 a.m. - Refreshments
8:35 a.m. - Welcome and remarks
9:00 a.m. - Games begin
